Mice inside or squirrels outside?

I hear scratching in several rooms of the house, but I can never tell if it's from mice possibly inside the ceiling and attic or from squirrels/birds in the gutters or on our metal roof. We don't have droppings inside the house, and the traps don't catch anything, but the scratching drives me crazy. Any thoughts?

Squirrels chewing on our roof can be shocking loud, but I really only hear them up there during walnut season.

Crows and birds are unmistakable. The thump when they land and don’t make scratching noises.

So unfortunately it’s probably mice. You need to check in the attic for signs.
