Accepting admission offers

Anonymous
DC likes 3 schools almost equally and two of them are in-state. Is there an issue with accepting offers at all three schools, putting down a deposit and later withdrawing your acceptance (regardless of whether or not they reimburse the deposit)? We accepted one of them early this week and there was no language in there that says we cannot accept others. I keep reading on here that it is not allowed and schools may cancel your acceptance if they find out you accepted with more than one school and they find out. What basis will they have to do this if their acceptance page does not say anything along those lines?

Also, if I were to accept the two in-state schools, is it more likely they will find out? Do schools within a state share such information?

Ethics in action

If you are worried others will find out, then you know what you are doing is unethical.

What are you trying to figure out such that you need to put down multiple deposits?

Is it that because FASFA is delayed, there is uncertainty about costs?
Is it that they need to visit to figure out?
Many schools are delaying the need to decide until late May / June due to the delay in the FASFA so I don't understand what the need is you are trying to address.

Rip off the bandaid now. No reason to delay and get your kid kicked out of all three.

What it means is that you’re making everything harder for all three schools just because you can afford it. They need to finalize housing and class numbers, and students on the waitlist are waiting to find out, but you just want a little more time to think?

Why did you accept so early? You have almost three months to decide. May 1 is generally the date you have to pay a deposit somewhere.

Why would you do this? As other posters are saying, you are making things difficult for all the schools. You are teaching your kid that lying is acceptable and starting them off on the wrong foot at their new school. You will look like a huge jerk to your high school guidance office, at a minimum.

Gather the best information you can and then make a decision. There's no reason you need to push decision making into the summer.

OP already accepted one. Do you or dc have second thoughts?

What if you accept one and then later get into another top choice? Can you rescind?

Its a confusing choice and there will be some buyer's remorse but kid needs to show maturity and make a decision.

Why make the decision now? College don’t need to hear from you until May 1?

Reminds me of people who call for two taxis when they need a ride to the airport, just in case the taxi is late, they have a backup.
