APS Rising freshman and course selection

This had felt like a fairly straight-forward process but now our family is getting confused.

Do most kids take PE during the summer? If so, what electives normally go in its place in your experience? High school PE feels like it's probably kind of lame especially for kids who participate in sports, but the summer school session is really onerous.

If your child did it during the summer what did you put in its place?

No most of them don’t take it over the summer.

But if you do, you can take 2 electives instead of one.

Band and theater.
Art and chorus.
Computer science and band.

DD took PE in the summer after freshman year as did most of her friends to make room for either AP Psych or an elective. Summer before 9th grade, DD took econ/personal finance to get that out of the way, but many of her friends took a math class.

As the parent of a MS kid, the fact that incoming 9th graders are math classes in summer school to maximize the number of academic classes they can take in actual HS is all that is wrong with the college system (or all that is wrong with Arlington, I can't tell).

You are correct. Mine took PE in the summer before 10th grade b/c it was the only to fit in an actual interest and still get all the courses needed on the transcript. Electives should have half year options so they can actually try different subjects before choosing a major on college apps.

Mine took PE one summer so that she could fit in two yearlong theater classes in 10th grade - it was supposed to be AP Psych but there was a schedule conflict. Now she's majoring in theater in college.

I agree there should be more 1/2 year electives!

OP, I think most 9th graders take PE during the school year. After 9th grade is when people will take it over the summer.
