My son is in third grade in AAP. He's getting threes and fours and everything but just got twos in writing. I don't see any writing coming home in the work that I do is just worksheets which he does fine on. Any idea on how I can help him in writing? |
Posting to clarify, he's getting threes and fours and all other subjects. I'm not sure what's going on with writing but I want to help him. He is eight so the curriculum is brand new in terms of AAP. Any advice on what I can do to support him? Thank you. |
I would email the teacher and ask specifically what he needs help with. |
You have to ask the teacher to show you some work, and explain to you what he needs to work on. Are there teacher conferences?
You can have him write at home - letters to family, stories, etc. Dont make it painful. Writing practice at this age is not about organization or spelling: you mostly want to get the ideas out there fluidly, and maybe work on complete sentences and different punctuation. |
+1 A 2 is an invitation to contact the teacher. (It took me a very long time to realize this.) |
Oh jeez. Of course writing at this age is about spelling and organization. Do you have any of your old papers from grade school? Kids used to be able to write, especially when they were given explicit instruction in what/how to write. Kids these days can't write because "you mostly want to get the ideas out there." |

OP here. I spoke to the teacher and she said he has great ideas but needs to expand upon them, and use more adjectives in details in addition to proofreading. Does anyone have any workbooks or anything similar to recommend? I want to be able to practice writing to a prompt as well as some academic writing. I know for example in science they have to describe their findings so it's not just writing a story. Any suggestions? |
