Cancer clinical trial success stories?

Does anyone have any success stories of someone who did a clinical trial for cancer and had a good result?

I know someone who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer probably close to 10 years ago now, and his cancer is now all “frozen” or “dead.” Would have been terminal if not for the clinical trial, which has resulted in a now-approved drug. There is hope!

Ive treated hundreds of patients on trials. The question you ask is dependent on the type of trial, the stage of the cancer, the type of cancer, and more.

Please elaborate.

Sadly, no.

ok.
stage 4 CRC (not sure of specifics of its genetic makeup).
not sure the name of the trial but it's an immunotherapy and it's in stage 2 of its trial period.

I know someone years ago who had run out of options for her leukemia and wound up in a drug trial for Gleevec (Imatinib). That was more than 20 years ago and she's doing great. There are so many targeted treatments these days and new ones are being studied all the time.

Unfortunately, the genetic makeup is important. Regardless, you indicate its a phase 2 trial; is it a randomized phase 2? in this setting they randomize you to a standard arm vs experimental arm (usually standard + drug).

I don't know which type. this person is at MSK and their oncologist said of all the trials it's the one he prefers for this patient.

My MIL was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in the mid 1990's and she went into a clinical trial at Hopkins of a new type of hormone inhibitor drug (sorry, I don't remember which one) which kept her cancer stable for a good 10 years. By then other new drugs had come out that she could use. Anyway, her original prognosis was a couple of years and she ended up living almost 20 years with stage 4 BC.

I have a friend with Metastatic Breast Cancer, spread to spine and lungs. She has been in clinical trials and is still doing well. It's been about 6 - 7 years. I don't see her on a daily basis anymore as she moved to be closer to family but I see her posts, etc. and she's still doing her thing.

My father had an aggressive form of leukemia and was given 6 weeks to live. He qualified for a trial and lived two years. 23 months of that two years was good quality.
