Food recommendations

Hi I was with Petsmart and they F-ed me by sending multiple bags I didn't order - now I have to call multiple times to get it fixed.

Anyways, I would like to go with Chewy because they were great when I had a cat. I have a puppy golden doodle and I am overwhelmed by the amount of food choices. What do you feed your dog that doesn't give them gross poops?

Thanks!

My dog can’t eat chicken without having stomach issues. I get him the beef Honest Kitchen. We buy the dehydrated version and add a bit of warm water. He loves it

There's no one size fits all (I have two dogs that have to eat different foods) and it takes some experimentation.

That said, the Kirkland house brand stuff from Costco is good quality and a bargain. I switch varieties, but they've all worked well for my dog that doesn't require a special diet.

I feed Purina Pro Plan because that's what my dog's prior owner fed and it's working fine. With other dogs I've fed Canidae and Honest Kitchen.

Whatever works for your dog. My two need very different foods due to allergies/intolerances/metabolisms.

One of my dogs eats Wellness Complete Health lamb and the other has allergies so he's on Natural Balance limited ingrediet diet lamb. My vet says chicken is a big allergen for dogs so we try to avoid it. It's just an overused protein because even if you may be feeding another flavor, lots of dog food has chicken meal in it for added protein. But your dogs may do okay on it.

Well, what do you mean by "gross poops"? You need to figure out what is going on there. You have a puppy, has it been checked for worms? The vast majority of puppies have worms (even from breeders). When my older dog dog was a puppy she was having bad diarrhea and she had worms. We treated the worms. Still bad diarrhea. Turns out she gets diarrhea from any grain-free food (and my vet doesn't want her on grain free anyway), it is just too rich for her. My younger dog, a 4-yr old toy poodle rescue, pretty much does fine on anything.

So ... I have obsessed over this, taking quality and cost into consideration and landed on Wellness Complete Health. (Before that my older dog got a Natural Balance kibble, but it was discontinued.) One regular bag for my older dog and one "small breed" bag for my poodle (I think the only real difference is the size of the kibble). My dogs also get a spoon full of warmed wet food (Merrick -- usually Wingaling or Wilderness Blend) on top, but it isn't necessary.

You are saying gross poops, and that implies a problem, so I'd say first stop is the vet. Then, follow their advice regarding food. When my vet advised me to avoid grain free food I asked her which to use, and she said "just pick one and see how the dog does on it." And remember to order a smaller-sized bag in case it doesn't work out and you want to move on to a different food.

PP ^^ here. I'll add that the Wellness Complete Health I feed my dogs is the chicken one, and they do really well with it. YMMV.

I'm sorry you spent so much time on this....I mean something that won't give her gross poops. The food she has now is exclusive to Petsmart but I don't want to shop there anymore so I'm looking to switch. - op

Purina Pro Plan sensitive works well for our labradoodle with a sensitive stomach.

We started on a fancy brand that has lentils or some types of legume in it and it gave him serious heart issues. Our vet said it is an uncommon issue but generally there are more risks than benefits to using a trendy boutique brand of dog food.

After we switched him to purina pro plan the heart issue went away and it really does work for his digestion.

It's dog poop. It's gross.

Another vote here for the Purina pro plan. I am also feeding the sensitive skin and stomach. I am happy with it, My dog no longer has room clearing farts, so that's good.

I also feed Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach. I use the salmon formula because I was told that my dog’s breed does well on salmon. I also feed Olewo carrots to firm up my dog’s stool.

PP here. Soooo -- let's try this again. What about the dog's poop do you fear is going to get suddenly "gross" in a way it hasn't been before if you pick the wrong food on Chewy?

I mean, dog poop is inherently gross, no matter what the food. So what in particular are you afraid of with a new food? Like I said, grain-free food can be too rich for some dogs and cause diarrhea. Not sure what else you might be concerned about here.

Switching dog foods can cause diarrhea and it's hard to know if it will normalize in time. Not sure why you're obsessed with my dog's poops when I hardly mentioned them.
