Can a 4.5 year old learn to slow down his speaking?

4.5 yo son. Normal functioning and normal physical functioning but has an articulation issue with speech - pushes his tongue forward on the difficult letters. To make matters worse, he is talking a mile per minute. He frequently talks without thinking - calls mom "dad" and vice versa. He is just in a hurry to gab. How can we slow him down? I don't think his speech issues will resolve until he slows and is more considered in what he is saying.

I held his hand and told him to look at my eyes while speaking and this worked l.
