AP Physics C

My DC's high school allows students in 9th to take both honors bio and chem. They also allow those in honors pre-calc in 10th grade take AP Physics C Mech (though apparently few do it).

My kid wants to do this but I'm worried about the workload (mostly physics). Would it be too much a stretch? I hear ap phys c uses a lot of calculus concepts.

Also, would this fill out the graduation requirement? For math I know that even if you double up, you still have to take it all four years.

Are you sure it’s not AP Physics 1?

I thought AP Phy C had a calc corec.

I would not suggest AP Physics C without Calculus.

At BCC you can take AP Physics C whenever you want, as long as you've taken Honors Physics first and you're done or are doing AP Calculus BC. Since few kids are at Calculus level in 9th or 10th, AP Physics C is generally pushed to 11th grade or later.

DS will take AP Calc BC in 10th then AP Physics C in 11th. The Science chair advised against taking both in the same year, even though it's technically allowed. At BCC, AP Chem and AP Bio are double periods, so it was tough getting it all to fit in the schedule, what with all the other requirements and coursework he wants to take.

AP Phys C requires calculus, not precalc, OP. Your kid is heading towards disaster if he takes that class without a solid understanding of calculus. The school will not let him take it without calculus. I think you missed something.

Yes. AP Physics 1 is listed elsewhere on the info.

OP here, pretty sure I'm not making a mistake.

Looking at the info sheet right now and under AP physics C mech it said it is a 1st year class with a co-requisite of calculus. In parentheses, it says that strong math students in honors pre-calc may be allowed.

Which school? They're completely irresponsible. AP Physics C is the hardest AP. Taking Calculus concurrently is already hard enough, given that the kid may not have time to fully integrate the calculus concepts before they're used in Physics C. I strongly discourage your kid from taking Physics C and precalc in the same year. That makes ZERO sense.

The College Board website says: "You should have taken calculus or be taking calculus at the same time as this course".

It does seem off OP because pre-cal honors doesn't actually cover any of the calculus concepts that are used in AP physics C. Some schools recommend you take AP physics C only concurrently with Calc B/C, not even A/B.

Your school may be really unusual and allow pre-cal honors kids to take it, but I think people still wouldn't recommend it.

This is so ridiculous it must be an error in the document.
Even if it were premittedt in extreme cases, it wouldn't be in the main documentation.

Can you post a photo? (http://img.bb)
AP Physics C without taking precalculus or any physics class first?! For a sophomore?!

The school is Walter Johnson. Got the paper at parent info night. The site doesn't work for me right now (can try later). Is there another way to post an image into dcum?

Never mind found a site that works.
