Gifting to Adult Children

Anonymous
A few posts revolving around this recently. Curious, if you gift to your adult children, what is your age, net worth and gift to each kid?

We are 65, 10.5MM net worth, gift 15k to our two grown kids annually, plus monthly 529 contributions that are normally a few hundred

You can each give 18k to your kids annually.

I’m the adult child but we get the maximum exclusion every year, from each parent, but not to our spouses. Honestly idk why and it’s fine because we all have plenty of money.

The biggest gifts haven’t been cash transfers but instead debt free educations and loans from trusts for houses.

OP, might be better to front lad those 529s…more tax free growth

I plan on gifting my only child 18k a year when she is done with school and has started working. The only condition is that she maximizes her Roth/403 investment vehicle. My Dad got me started investing at a young age and it's one of the main reasons I am able to retire at a youngish age.

Age 62, 18k to each niece (2 nieces) net worth is higher than yours

We have kept it simple. At Christmas each married couple gets $50,000 and at birth each grandchild gets $100,000 in a 529 plan. We have set up trusts but that is for down the road.

Zero, we still have young kids, and we don't have that kid of money. Why are you so stingy?

We give them about 18k/yr and don't want to spoil them with more. Stingy?

That's a good plan. My ILs always gave my spouse a large check for Christmas and I got some chocolates. We always laugh because it went right into our joint account. I suspect this was for the benefit of other family members.

Are gifts from parents to married child considered marital asset? Only inheritance is exempted correct?

Inheritance isn’t automatically considered separate, you have to put it into an account that isn’t held jointly. Anything that goes into a joint account is definitely marital property. Not sure about any other rules, but that’s an obvious one.
