Are there any T50 colleges besides Notre Dame that have single sex dorms? I really like this and that the majority of the students are Catholic and many attend Mass. Are there any other top schools that are similar?
Please note, we not looking for identity at the expense of academics. |
| I’d note that if I understood it. |
| Maybe BC or Villanova? Not sure about dorms |
| Many colleges have gender specific housing as a choice. None that I know of segregate all students into gender specific dorms the way ND does. Some may do co-ed by floor. Is your DC also good with the curfews that are imposed at ND? Something like by 11 pm all friends of the opposite gender must exit the dorms (seem very draconian to me) |
I went to VT in the 90s. Most of the dorms were gender specific. Is it not the way now? |

OP, just come up with a list of Top 50 schools that you think are most like Notre Dame in other ways, then research their dorm situation.
You’re unlikely to find any other school where the “majority” go to Mass every week because other than Notre Dame Georgetown and BC are the only Catholic schools in the top 50 and that ain’t happening in either one of those schools. Probably not happening at Villanova either. |
| I am not sure about the nature of your concern. If dorms are the issue, and DC is a girl, there a few all-women's colleges that are really excellent. Most of the best of them are not Catholic (those went coed.) Some are located in suburban areas and are EXTREMELY safe. They tend to be liberal if that's a concern for you (it's not for me.) |
You need to learn to read. |
Very good advice, although I think Holy Cross is up there too. Not too sure about their dorm policies. |
I meant that we are not interested in colleges with a strong Catholic identity that are not highly ranked. |
| Thanks for the replies. As a freshman I lived in a coed dorm and hated the experience. I will keep looking around but I am pretty certain that it will be ND or a university in the UK or EU. We have found single gender housing with single rooms in proximity to the target schools there. |
| OP, am I to understand that you are looking to return to college? If not then I think what’s actually important is your kids opinion and that hasn’t come across at all in your post. |

St. Michael’s College, the Catholic part of the U of Toronto, apparently has some single-sex dorms:
“In SMC’s Loretto Residence, female-only students can enjoy a private residence building that features single rooms and double-ensuite rooms, as well as exercise spaces, laundry facilities, common rooms, and a dining hall.” |
But what does your kid want? And ND has like an 11 percent acceptance rate, so while you can be certain it’s a match, the school will probably, 9/10 chance, disagree. ?? |
