My DS is in Algebra honor but he said he didn’t have enough time solve the math problem. From your experience, If his essays are good, is there chance he would be accepted? Thanks! |
I mean, none of us really know but I would think finishing the test would be an important piece of the puzzle. But again, who tf actually knows. 😂 |
Dont worry. All applicants have algebra honors and about same GPA as your DS. The essay is just a facade for admitting students based on non-merit standards to fill a predetermined diversity composition. It's a lottery based admission. |
My DD is takes Geometry and didn’t have time to finish the math problem either. Does anyone know if they get partial credit for the correctly completed section? |
Problem doesnt have be "right". There is no right or wrong answer. Student assumptions and how they went about solving the problem matters. Depending on the assumptions they made, the answer they arrived at would be different. If you look at the past year problem, the best answer was None of the choices that were provided as part of the problem, and an explanation why they were not. |
Applicants are in a mix of math classes - Algebra 1 HN, Geometry HN, Algebra 2 HN, or Algebra 2/Trig, but they are not going by the student's academics or math level, unfortunately. There is no evaluation of math proficiency, other than this one essay problem. Admission is based on non-merit factors with diversity as primary objective. |
Our older got in without solving, but then they are a proficient writer. We are talking about a kid who finds bliss indulging in Charles Dickens, C.S. Lewis, Daniel Defoe, etc., novels. I presume they were impressed with his writing skills even if his math wasn't expert level. |
it is pretty amazing they don't consider levels or rigor of courses taken.
And one essay problem that is essentially the only differentiating input. How hard is it to get straight As in a non-accelerated math and "honors" level middle school track in FCPS? Not that hard. We know because the average applicant is a 3.9+, so maybe an one or two A-. Given this, any kid with experience factors who meets the basic primer above is essentially a shoe-in. It really is kind of gross. Many MC kids didn't choose their parent's careers or how they were born. |
How can everyone be a shoe in? It's a limited access program. |
But those MC kids' parents voted for existing school board or abstained from voting and allowed winning of current board, which supports the current non-merit based admission in the name of equity & diversity. |
DEI baby! |
If no right or wrong answer, that would be great. But how did you know? |
My kid did the test this morning and based on what I was told, there should be a correct answer for this year's math/science question. |
Do you by any chance know the right answer to the question ? |
Honestly, I have to say no. I don't think they get accepted. |
