At what point does weighted GPA show up on report cards? I have a high school freshman and it’s not there (yet). I thought it would be in the most recent reports.
Also how is it calculated? I know what classes are worth 5 and which are worth 4 (for As) but not sure exactly how to calculate and whether to include middle school classes for high school credit etc, |

MCPS school employee here.
No idea why weighted GPA doesn't show up on report cards. It never has been in the 15 years I've worked in MCPS. Probably a dumb reason for keeping them off. Honors, AP, IB all worth 1 point more. So let's say your 9th grader takes these classes and gets these grades (with the point value in parenthesis): Honors Eng 9 - A (5) AP Government - B (4) Biology - C (2) Algebra 1 - B (3) Phys Ed - A (4) Ceramics - B (3) Band - A (4) Total: 25 25/7 = 3.57 wGPA And for good measure 3.28 unweighted GPA As for middle school classes, I don't know if any contribute to weighted GPA. As for what gives credit, typically it's if they take Algebra 1 or beyond in middle school. Also languages contribute. Not sure what else. Ask to speak to your kid's school's resource counselor and they can help. |

You’ll get a grade and credit report next fall that will show their GPA (weighted and unweighted), grades (including high school courses taken in middle school), SSL hours, status of all the required state exams, and their progress toward graduation. You’ll get an updated version of this report twice a year throughout high school.
Note that the middle school classes for HS credit will only count toward the GPA if it helps, but they get the credit anyway as long as they passed the class. Eventually your student will get a login for Naviance, which is the college application portal, and the weighted GPA will be available there as well. |
Thanks. I understand all that but it’s more complicated than that. Last semester most classes were 0.5 credits, but one was a full 1.0 credit and another was 0.25. How fires this factor? Then there were the five high school classes he took in middle school (all .5 credits per semester) plus Health A over the summer. Are they average per year, or according to their credit? |
Thanks - I guess this is the simplest answer! Wait until fall. Thanks. |
For middle schools only the HS classes which are all 0.5 credits would count towards the GPA. |
You’ll get one in the Spring or Summer for 9th grade. |
Go into ParentVUE, select documents, and select the SGGCR. The weighted GPA is at the top center. DS didn’t attend MS in MCPS, but DD’s MS Algebra and two Spanish courses appear. They are marked that they are from MS and not included in the weighted gpa. |

| Ignore weighted GPA. People around here cite it all the time, but it's meaningless. Take very rigorous courses. Do the best you can. These are important. But WGPA isn't a good measure of that. |
Your child is obviously in the magnet and should be able to do basic multiplication with decimals to calculate this. Do you not get how weighting works? It is done by semester. |
| SGGCR with this information should be posted in parentvue next week under documents for first semester |
Yes, I see the latest SGGCR there now. |
Languages are probably weighted after the first two levels. Some kids stop after Level 2. Starting with Level 3 it is likely it is Honors Spanish 3, not just Spanish 3. |
Or a hard copy could have been handed out to students at school with Q2 report card. |
