| Many admissions decisions received yesterday - how many years of Foreign language did your student take and to what level (eg AP in 11th grade). Especially interested for engineering, CS |
| This topiic has been beaten to death. |
| I have a sophomore engineering student at VT. She took honors French as a junior as her last foreign language class. She did not take AP French. |
| Daughter is at both for engineering. She stopped foreign language after 10th. |
I assume you mean “in” at both? |
Over and over and over |
Sorry, yes. In at both this year. Yep, it’s been discussed a great deal. However, I decided to answer because it does happen. There were reasons she stopped and this board stressed me out about something we couldn’t change. If your kid is younger, take the language. |

10th - 1

DS (2021 cycle) and DD (current cycle) both took 2 honors, 3 honors and 4 from 9th -11th. Opted out of foreign language all together during senior year. DS was STEM focused and DD art/music focused. Both added electives in their interest areas during senior year in place of foreign language.
Both admitted to UVA EA. DS went to T10 school instead. DD is still deciding and waiting for RD decisions. |
| Which classes did they take instead of foreign language in 11th and 12th |
And the previous answers consistently were that 4 full high-school years of a foreign language are strongly desired by UVa, including by the Engineering school (which is where the CS Dept exists). DC’s classmates at UVa SEAS all had 4 full years of a foreign language, with a single exception DC knows about — who is a dirt poor student from a small county in SW Virginia (think coal mines) with very limited HS course offerings. One *might* get in without it, exceptions surely must exist as special cases of one sort or another, but the trend is quite clear. Do whatever you and DC think best for DC, but very clearly the odds of a UVa admissions offer (and UVa admissions is a lottery, even for in-state) are best for those who complete all of the expected HS coursework. |
+1 from parent of 3 Hoos, including 2 current CS majors |
Some of us are new here and have not seen it and would like to know. Thanks! |
| I agree that this topic is raised every few weeks. However, I didn’t realize VT wants 4 years in high school too. I thought it was just UVA. |
Some of would like to hear about VT. Seriously, if this topic is beaten to death for some, move on. I for one would like to know about VT specifically and not a thread on colleges in general as it relates to foreign language. This thread said UVA and VT, great! I can ignore the UVA info. Why do people crap on threads they don't like. Just move on to another thread. |
