My high school Sophomore is not doing well in the quarter, lots of Cs and one D so far.
I would like to understand Schoology better so I can help him keep track of his assignment/quiz. He's a bit stress out about his classes (mostly Honor) and is not whiling to show me how to navigate it. Is there any way, as a parent, I could learn how Schoology actually works? Are all teachers "obligated" to use it and update it timely? I get a lot from him "teacher has posted" or "teacher hasn't updated it" How can I help him keep track of what's due. I check SIS but the information is vague and not up to date. So frustrating! |
| Quarter stated on Monday, so they don't have anything yet. |

It is a fairly straightforward system to use. Get his login. When you go to courses, it will show all the classes he is taking. Look through to see what is posted. There is a calendar on the top right that should show scheduled quizzes and tests (not all teachers keep this updated).
You will generally not find grades there. That is only available in SIS. |

If you can learn how to click around on DCUM, you can figure Schoology out.
Also, don't let your kid get away with "not showing" you how to navigate it. Be the parent. |
this... just go course by course and see what's posted. DS is only in middle school but I quickly figured out what I really need to keep an eye on... - his math teacher is great, posts detailed daily schedule for each unit with what they're covering in class, classwork, homework, videos, links, test schedule etc. Very easy for me to say - did you do the homework? have you studied for the test? - his english teacher is second best. She posts daily agendas with what they're covering in class and sometimes includes ongoing projects and upcoming tests. But since it's daily he doesn't have a big picture of the unit or what's upcoming. - science teacher is very sporadic and doesn't really seem to know how to use the tool. She'll post stuff every now and then but doesn't reference it in class (or DS doesn't hear her). Occasionally will have a post on schoology to remind them of an upcoming test and/or tell them what to focus on, but it's really inconsistent. i really only check those 3 - and it's more to make sure he's on top of things if he tells me he doesn't have any work to do. I watch for updates/announcements from the other classes but the rest seem to not have homework and are easy As. The key is having your kids login - the parent view is very different and less detailed. Which is great if your kid is on top of things but most aren't. |
| I get the same from my kid. Some of the teachers are good about updating schoology, and others aren't. There should be more consistency, but...FCPS. |
I use my kid's login to get the detailed view. |
It's complicated. You have to spend a lot of time figuring out each teacher's system. Some announce assignments on schology and put tests and quizzes on schoology calendar. Some give a unit guide in paper and it's listed there. Some just post an announcement about upcoming test. Some embed it in the notes a list of upcoming assignments, etc. Some only make announcements in class on the whiteboard. My kids use their agenda to fill in anything and for my child executive functioning issues we wrote out where to check for each class and he does it daily to add any new thing to his calendar. I wish they would require one way of doing it for all, but it's not going to happen. |
| It’s very frustrating when your child’s Schoology says missing assignments and they are over 20 days old or 28 and the teacher hasn’t updated anything. |
Email the teacher and ask if you are viewing updated information or if there are updates pending. Teacher may appreciate that you as a parent are staying on top of your kids stuff and would be willing to provide clarity. Also teachers update schoology/sis/parentvue when they know parents are relying on that information. |
I emailed the teacher if she could meet with child to discuss and she wrote me one word back as if she was annoyed. |
This. It is not as simple as posters are implying. Teachers have different systems. My junior has had at least one who didn't use it at all. |
The OP said “lots of Cs and one D”, so I assumed it was being updated. |
| Could he switch out of some honors classes or is it too late for that? |
| How long have you been in FCPS? I have been navigating Schoology since my kids were in elementary school. |
