RMIB - how many BCC kids

Anonymous
My kid, BCC-bound, had very strong MAP-R scores and slightly lower, but good, MAP-M scores. To our surprise, my DC got into Blair SMCS but not RMIB. Just wondering if it was a disadvantage to be zoned to BCC. Excited for DC but RMIB was their top choice and they’re not even waitpooled.

I’d be surprised if many BCC kids choose RMIB. BCC has an IB program, and the commute is a nightmare.

What were the scores? It’s unusual to get in to Blair with higher R scores than M just because it’s harder to score high in MAP R.

I can’t imagine choosing RMIB when you are zoned for BCC. I doubt many people even apply. Blair makes sense because that’s a program not available at the home school.

+1 Why would anyone do this when you have the program at your home school and a great cohort at BCC?

BCC IB is better than RM's.

Because BCC has an IB program, OP. MCPS isn't going to bus a kid who already has the same program at their home school to another one far away at another school.

Duh.

I'm not sure if it all makes sense tbh...there are kids with lower map-R than my DD who got into RMIB. She was rejected at RMIB, but then got into all the Poolesville programs, and some of her friends who got into RMIB got rejected at one or more program at PHS.

Point is, how they decide is not that clear. Its not just MAP though, or grades (after a certain cut point of course). I am biased and thought my kid's essay was great but maybe RMIB was looking for something else.

+2 I can't imagine sending my kid on a long daily bus ride when IB is available closer to home at BCC. I don't see any advantage to that.

? No, a PP stated: "BCC IB is better than RM's. ". My question is, "why is BCC IB better than RM's"?

Guessing OP's child has social challenges and wants a change? That would be the only reason for me to even consider that kind of commute when the same program is available at the home school.

I’m zoned for BCC and RM is a 17 min drive. Not exactly horrific. I think some of these posters have waitlisted kids and are trying to discourage folks from accepting spots. I don’t know the answer to OP’s actual question and I don’t have a rising 9th grader, but every year people come on and try to say the various programs aren't worth it to get others to release seats. Take with a grain of salt.

RMIB has magnet level courses starting in 9th grade. They are designated as RMS. The diploma program starts in 11th grade, and anyone in the cluster can join it, just like at BCC, but the RMS magnet courses in 9th and 10th are only for the RMIB magnet kids.

Pretty much all the RMIB kids take RMS and AP classes starting in 9th.

So, if that distinction is important to you, then go with RMIB.

There are some parents who just hate RMIB. It don't know if it's jealousy, or just trying to pull it down so that their own HS magnets prestige goes up.
