I'm size 6, 5'1" and need a dress for a fall wedding. Don't want sleeveless and not thrilled with typical mother of the bride dress choices. Any suggestions? |
How formal? What is the locale and venue? What types of dresses do you like generally? (Sheath? A-line?) Do you care if long or knee-length or midi? What colors do you like? Need more info to give helpful advice. |
Google "mother of the bride" dresses and see if there are any that you like. If that category doesn't seem to match what you want then google "cocktail dresses", "formal dresses", "Easter dresses" or whatever else seems to be descriptive of the look that you are going for. |
I was surprised by this ~ but I found it helpful to go into David's Bridal. I looked at the bridesmaid dresses. I found choices that *didn't* make me look like a bridesmaid. They have matching shrugs/wraps you can order to match the dress which meant I didn't have to go sleeveless.
I didn't want their, or most other place's, Mother of the Bride dresses that were weighted-down with sequins. |
Thanks - wedding is formal and I’m leaning towards full or tea length. I’m short, so many styles don’t look great. I have looked at a lot of dresses online and not a fan of most, especially the beading and sequence options. I will try David’s. |
Nordstrom , Macy’s, Dillards—all online. There isn’t much in the stores. I have the opposite problem. My DS was married a year ago and need to move this dress on to consignment (?) because it is taking up closet space 😐 |
Is Rent the Runway still around - it was great when i had to get a MOG dress. |
Saks Off Fifth has some beautiful stuff and its on sale |
Nordstrom has plenty of non-matronly long-sleeved or one-sleeved options: https://www.nordstrom.com/browse/women/clothing/dresses/formal-dresses?filterBySleeveLength=long-sleeve

I will be 54 when my son is 28 and god willing I will roll into that wedding in a dress like this one:

I really like the options at theia and Teri Jon. Both look a big step up from the generic look that so many women gravitate to. Also, I would do midi length at your height. Floor length gowns age the typical 60 year old mob by like 15 years. |
I swear to god it’s the posture, the drooping lean so many women acquire. OP didn’t ask but if she really wants to look fabulous, start working on Pilates and/or lifting if you don’t already do it. And I like those Teri Jon dresses. Depending on the formality, you could also wear a really nice suit. Not sure when “aged prom queen” became the only acceptable option for MOB. |
Thank you for this! (I'm the PP you're responding to). I don't understand why when you're a MOB, there's some immediate expectation that you go to the certain section of the store that has a very particular type of "playing the role" type of dress. When those dresses are really unflattering in most cases. And aren't things anyone would ever wear in any other setting. And typically don't match the vibe of what everyone else at the wedding is wearing. Exactly like the PP says - everyone else is wearing nice wedding guest dresses, cocktail dresses, black dresses, gowns, whatever. And mother of the bride looks like an aged prom queen. Wear a dress that makes you look fabulous. (and again, at 5'1, i wouldn't wear floor length) https://theiacouture.com/products/rayna-one-shoulder-draped-gown-in-moss-green https://theiacouture.com/products/theia-kimono-satin-cocktail-in-storm-blue https://theiacouture.com/products/sevyn-high-low-cocktail-dress-in-nautical-navy https://theiacouture.com/products/theia-lucia-kimono-midi-dress-in-navy https://www.terijon.com/collections/shop-all/products/metallic-jacquard-shirtdress-with-floral-print?variant=44129917731055 https://www.terijon.com/collections/shop-all/products/metallic-jacquard-abstract-pattern-coat-dress?variant=44290224586991 |
Have you looked at Alex Evenings?

My neighbor went to Zoya’s Atelier. She looked great in the photos. I think it’s in Falls Church or Arlington. |
