| Please tell me about the reading curriculum currently happening for kindergarten? We do lots of reading at home to supplement but do worry about the things we hear about happening in K classrooms, for example no more small group instruction… Seems things were different when our older kids went to K-5 a few years ago. |
| It's much better. They get a very strong focus on phonics, which didn't exist when your older kid was there. |
| It's a good curriculum. However, as your child gets older, make sure they read novels at home. Currently, that is not done in school unless your child is in the enriched program. |

It isn’t that great. Phonics with RGR is half of it. Then benchmark is still going strong. Benchmark is awful. Also, RGR is a lot of worksheets and the content is boring and it would be better to incorporate opportunities for knowledge then another story about Sally and her dog. Would be great to see more core knowledge embedded into literacy units, which is happening in other keyed in places.
It’s okay. It’s not 3-cueing. But it’s not great. I wish MCPS spent more time talking about being an attractive work place for teachers and the best curriculum for kids and less time embedded in retaliatory behaviors and scandal. |
+1 RGR is very good in our MCPS K. Lot of progress since start of year. |
| It depends how you feel about phonics. Listen to The Daily’s podcast about the war on phonics. I think the episode aired in October or November 2023. |
Also the Sold a Story podcast. |

RGR is great. Benchmark is not but is going to be replaced.

Thank god. Although didn’t they say that last year? Also everyone was glad to get rid of 2.0 and the replacement was Benchmark so, I’ll reserve my enthusiasm. |
