Major - should you not be honest??

Anonymous
All of these decisions made me realize most of the kids who got in declared obscure or "easier" majors. I feel bad I didn't know about this loophole as this is my first kid.

He declared business for all! Feeling so dumb. Has gotten into some good schools and deferred at others.

But deferred at top choices. One school he is waiting on is TX. If he's denied which I expect, he can appeal. Would it make sense to appeal to change his major to Econ? He's doing well in it and enjoying. Or is it better to just stick w business at another school?

I guess the allure of TX for many is McComb?

You are regretting that you raised an honest son?

Put things in perspective!

Econ is not going to get you better results. You need to be a boy who took 4 years of Latin and gets a recommendation from his Latin teacher who says he wants to be a Classics major.

No.

Any why in the world would you pay OOS to Texas right now?

Econ is in liberal arts college. So it's easier and my kid is taking AP Econ and has an A and enjoying

It doesn’t matter. It’s not a major that they have trouble filling. This only helps you if they are pretty sure you will major in something that is underenrolled.

NP: the PP is correct. Econ is a popular major even if it is in the Liberal arts or Arts and Science college. Econ, Psych and Biology are typically popular majors outside of Business, CS and Engineering. If your child was in state I would say yes, but OOS is capped and competitive.

Our son is sophomore in college. I agree to stay honest coz in his college CS is direct admit and you can’t transfer into CS.
Few of his classmates did try the trick you mentioned.

Parent of student at UT. McCombs is very difficult to transfer into later if that’s what he’s hoping for. If he’s happy going to UT as an Econ major, then do try to appeal. UT has been outstanding for my DS.

UT has the in state auto admit rule. It admits you to UT but not necessarily your college of choice (McCombs). I see lots of people trying to transfer into other schools on the parent listservs and it seems difficult.

For the person asking why UT OOS. It’s a relatively cheap OOS school (~$55K) with top ranked programs - think McCombs is like top 5 in the nation. U of MI COA is like $78K and everyone is dying to get in there. Plus Austin > Ann Arbor.

So many kids don't know what they are going to major in or change...not clear why it seems to be such a big deal when applying now unless it is for an undergrad business/engineering/nursing, etc. program.
