We're exploring our lottery options for 2nd grade next year. How are things currently going at TR/TRY? We're looking for an ES with a MS path. I have friends whose kids had a pretty dreadful experience at TRY a number of years ago (they left for other charters, private) related to COVID closures, poor teaching and classroom management, etc. I understand, however, that there's new leadership and I'm wondering if there's any improvement in either/or/both campuses.
FWIW, we're also considering moving to VA or MD at some point in the next year. We live on the Hill but are ambivalent about staying in DC and on the Hill. Thanks in advance for insight. |
| Where on the Hill are you? I would 100% not take TR Middle of SH, so you can always try to lottery into LT if securing the middle fees is that important to you. Honestly though, if you’re ambivalent about staying on the Hill long-term, why are you concerned about locking in middle now? Why not lottery for the ES(es) you like the best for their own sake? |

| I’d move sooner than later. No idea about TR middle, it was a mess for a while. If you’re moving to Va or Md, keep your kid where they are now so they don’t have to transition twice. Put energy into moving. |
| Just move. TR won't fix its problems in time for your kids. It's in a deep hole, which I think they finally recognize, but even if it wasn't, middle school is hard to make great and you'd still have high school to figure out. Just go. |

| I have a child at TR4 in second grade. So far, things are just ok--no major issues, but I'm also not blown away by the academics. My child is happy and has a good crew of friends. Most parents I know are not sending their kids to Young for middle. |
| OP—thanks for all this input. We’ve heard similar feedback from other parents. |
We left TR before the sh*t show got really bad, but even when we were there bolded was true. TR benefits in ECE from high SES families who always excel in ECE. |
This. It was never about excellence in academics even in the before times. |
| This school is under extremely toxic management. Look at the teacher turnover rate. Do NOT send your child there, they provide FAPE even less than a typical DCPS school. |

For people warning against TR (I believe you, though I'm disappointed to hear it), what schools in the neighborhood would you include on a lottery list for middle-elementary? We have LT and Maury and will probably add SWS though I'm not sure it's a great family fit. I don't think we want to shift to Montessori at this point so CHML is out. We want to avoid Brent because we heard they are renovating soon and we don't want to deal with a swing space at the end of elementary.
What other schools should we consider? Payne? Tyler? Watkins? We'd like to have 5 or 6 schools on our list to give us the best possible option of getting in somewhere. |
Inspired Teaching if you can commute there. Look into Seaton and Langdon-- both pretty solid although lacking a good middle school. Honestly, living where you apparently do, there aren't a ton of options. You can probably get into Stokes if you're willing to make a big effort on supporting a language. Or stay where you are and hope for Latin or BAISS in 5th. You say you want a middle school, but what kind of middle school do you want? There's no point in staying unless you actually *like* the middle school. In your situation, given what you want and what you're willing to deal with, I think moving is the best fit for you. |
I’m the OP, but didn’t write this post. But point taken. |
Are current parents not concerned? Or does it not matter? |
