Our preparer has increased their rates for the second year in a row and I would be interested in knowing what is the going rate in the DMV and if you would refer your tax preparer.

| We pay $1700 for a married filing jointly return, for federal and VA. Forvis (used to be Dixon Hughes Goodman) on Spring Hill Road in Tysons. |
$1700! Is it a complicated return or just a couple with salary income?

We pay $1000 for married filing jointly - federal & DC. W2/Schedule C (D40)/Schedule E (D30).
I thought this was high. |
The latter. That's McLean for ya. |
| $600. I thought that was too much, so now I just purchase TurboTax. |
| We’re retired. We paid $1200 last year for a fairly simple return that includes two rental properties, income from our brokerage accounts, and the occasional withdrawal from retirement account. We use a Maryland based firm although we live in DC. They just notified us that they are raising our fee to an estimated $2200 and when I asked why they said they have been undercharging us. I’m surprised by the increase, but what can you do? |
H&R Block Deluxe + 1 state - $20. |
Wow $2200??? Your return hardly sounds complicated. There must be less expensive options that aren’t TurboTax/H&R Block. |

Freetaxusa.com
Been using it for years, if you have a half a brain, you too can file for free |
Does freetaxusa handle d40 and d30? Turbo tax doesn’t. |
| My non-accountant husband does ours himself on Turbo Tax. W2 income, rental property, and side consulting income, investment income, plus annual backdoor Roths. Takes him a few hours one Saturday. |
How does he do the D40 and D30 on turbotax? Turbotax does not do them. |
| Second FreeTaxUSA. |
I also use Turbotax: income from W-2, pension, social security, investments, backdoor Roth and five K-1s. The latter are the most tedious. Federal plus two states. Nonaccountant DW. DH understands nothing about taxes but is excellent at keeping records and documents needed to do them. |
