| Is it possible to submit a book to AI for translation? It doesn’t have to be a literary translation, anything will do for now. How would that work? Any ideas? |
| like, you would input the text of a book and if would spit out a translation in another language? That is possible but with current character and usage limits it would take a while to do a whole book. |
| I think it would highly depend on the language. Some less utilized ones would probably not be possible. |
| You'd have to do a few paragraphs at a time |
| OP. I got a quote from an online AI service and it was ridiculous. Like $18k, when they literally just run it through a machine, takes 20 seconds. I could have a regular in person translator translate it for half the amount. |
I'll do it for you for 10k, lol |
| Why are you asking AI to do this? If you want a poorly styled machine translation, Google translate has been around for years. Or hire a human. |
I can hire a human for half the amount. I thought AI would be cheaper than a human. |
Yes and AI writes badly. If you want a poorly done machine translation use Google translate for free. I really don’t get why you thought AI would be a good idea even if it was cheaper. |
| FWIW, an eagerly anticipated book was recently released early in Brazil and translated VERY poorly with AI. As in, essentially unreadable. |
In fairness to OP, Chat gpt is WAY better than Google translate. OP I think if you wait six months the price will go down drastically. |
I wasn’t going to have the book published in English, just wanted to know what’s in the book. It can’t be that bad. Anyway, I’m certainly not going to spend that kind of money, so I might just find a translator. It won’t be easy as it’s a niche language. |

$10 for 50pages. Quality not assured. |
Do you already have this book in a digital format? Is it scanned in or is it converted from text? When you say obscure, is the language so obscure that you can't find it in Google, Yandex, or Bing translate? Yandex and Google at least will let you upload pdf documents for translation. DeepL also does this but I believe it requires an account (not sure how far you can get on a free account). If you just need the "gist," especially if you understand some of the original language enough to catch blatant mistakes, I would use these free resources, even if it means doing a chapter a day or so. I really doubt any paid AI will do better. If you want a real translation you'd have to pay a human. I suggest fooling around with these tools first to see if they suit your needs for whatever is you're looking to do. |
