Car for teen drivers

Anonymous
We live in a burb, have two cars. I wah so hardly ever need to drive during the day/week. Dh takes one car and teen dcs share the other one. It can be a pita because they have different activities and schedules to juggle, though they have been good about figuring it out. In this situation would you get a third car? I am hesitant due to the cost of insurance alone which is sky high (despite a good driver/phone app discount) already for two, and of course car payment as there are no good deals out there. At the same time I know it's likely one or both will need a car in college, and it might be wiser to spend before filling out FAFSA? Wdyt?

That really depends. Do either of them already know where they will be going? At most colleges (that I'm familiar with) it's strongly recommended that freshmen not bring a car to campus. Some colleges won't even allow freshmen to buy parking passes, so the student needs to find a private parking lot off campus.

I agree with this. I have 3 kids and we didn't let the first two have cars on campus their freshman year (allowed or not) and #3 won't have one either when she starts college in 18 months.
Different, of course, if your kid will be commuting to a local college.

But we did get a third (used) car for our teen drivers. Car is in my name, which also helps with insurance costs.

I don't think this will have a bearing on FAFSA.
