100% remote workers, where do you live?

Interested to hear from those who moved away from their original home.

Fairfax County. My kids were already in school when I took a remote job, and my husband is DC-based. Moving somewhere LCOL would have been super disruptive.

We do summer in the mountains.

Currently in DC, moving to Quebec City this summer. Very excited to be moving closer to where I grew up; I miss it.

Usually you cannot just move away from your original home, even if you are a remote worker. Your company needs to be registered in that state, and paying taxes based in that state.

My company's head quarters is in NJ, and I live in rural MoCo. If I move outside of the state I have to get written permission (for a state they are registered in), or give notice.

Fairfax county-- like the PP my kids were already in a school here.

My company is registered in all 50 states so we can move anywhere in the US as long as we update our tax status with sufficient notice.

I live in Fairfax County, although my company is not HQ here. My DH and I have good jobs by any measure (remote and good pay), but our jobs do not come with huge amounts of security because of the industry/roles, so we prefer to stay close to a job center, plus we have family in DC.

Company went remote for Covid, and they’re one of the companies that just stayed remote. I was living in Arlington but moved to the Richmond area in Chesterfield to take care of DH’s mom. We absolutely love it here.

MoCo. All my family is here and all my future career opportunities are here (DMV).

DMV because my spouse works in a SCIF. Even if he didn't, he wont move to the South because of policies and wont move to the North or Midwest because of winter weather. We cant even move out to someplace in Western MD or LCOL NOVA due to daily commutes.

Montgomery County. Almost 100% remote, but that changed about half a year ago and I now need to go to in-person meetings about once a month. Before that, I hadn't been in an office since March 2020.

So that worries me about moving far away.
