Is an I-phone worth it?

Anonymous
We are getting new phones, and I am wondering whether to get an I-phone. Is it worth the money? We have kids under 2 and so I don't anticipate that we will really use the games. I really want to get it for (1) ready Internet access and (2) taking cute pictures of the kids. I don't really need it for music, and I am not into technology, and so I may not take advantage of all the fancy applications.

The newest iphone has a pretty good camera and video. I would never carry a separate video camera, so this was a big plus.

I liked the convenience of taking and sharing photos on the first iphone even though the quality was not great. But this new one takes much better photos. I can easily send off photos/vid to DW at work or the inlaws.

As for the internet, it is very good.

i'm trying to figure this out too. i currently have t-mobile and haven't been thrilled with that experience, but from what i've heard, at&t isn't that much better and the latest generation of iphones have a ton of bugs that are still being worked out, is what i'm told.

I love my IPhone. I hardly use it for music, but I love the apps and internet. It has a mapping feature in case I get lost or stuck in traffic. It has an app that shows me where the closest restaurants are when I am in a neighborhood where I'm not familiar. I use the yellow and white pages to look up the closest shops when I'm out. It has a calculator for when I need one. I can look up movies at the local theater, even if I'm visiting relatives. I love being able to look up whatever I want on the internet quickly. I can text easily with the keyboard and I need email access for work. I also use the camera and access facebook on it. Basically, I just love it!

There are some apps for grownups that I use, for example when I'm stuck in a waiting room or on metro, there are apps with classic books (not the same idea as Kindle, but close), and I'm addicted to the Boggle and Word Warp apps. We also have things like iBird (for identifying birds in your backyard), the restaurant app. And I love being able to check emails and get directions from it.

Also my iPhone has my password keeper, which has not only my gazillion passwords but also the kids' SSN numbers, insurance numbers and tetanus shot dates. I learned the hard way to back everything up, though.

I have an IPhone 3G and it has changed my life! Prior to the Iphone I had a very basic cell phone. The Iphone just has everything in one space - camera, video camera, GPS, internet, email, Ipod - it's now really the only piece of technology I need. I don't really use it to play games, except Scrabble (Words with Friends - app - free!). Plus almost every company has an app - so I pay bills on my phone, transfer bank funds, etc. It really is awesome and super easy to use. I was worried I would break it - but I have a case and it's been fine.

The phones are expensive on their own - but when you get a contract they're more affordable. When I renewed my annual contract I was offered a 3G for $99 and 3GS for $199 - and our plan is slightly more than we were paying for two crummy, basic cell phones

Diddo on the Droid. DH and I got them back in May and love them. DD plays games on them at home or when we're waiting at a restaurant or somewhere. I love the GPS, camera, and other apps on there.

DH and I use an app that lets you access and sync with the family calendar on Google. (Google has a calendar that family members can share, and it's password-protected). DH, DD and I all add things to the app, and then the next time another one of us opens it, we see what someone else has added and the rest of the family calendar. We joke about how essential it is to our complicated lives.

One problem with the iPhone is that you have to pay the monthly charge to AT&T, which is steep. One way to get around this is to get an iTouch and then a little mobile wifi device called "MiFi". The MiFi is about the size of an iPhone, and it ensures you get WiFi access everywhere you go. You do have to carry two different things in your purse, but if you were already carrying a cellphone and iTouch or GPS, you were already doing that. Also, I don't think the iTouch has a camera. My old boss went with the iTouch/MiFi combination and seems really happy.

i'm not that crazy about my iPhone 3G's camera. If my daughter moves even the tiniest bit, the picture is blurry and unusable. She's 2, so she moves quite a bit. the internet access is nice, but I'm not sure it's $90/month nice. (that's the cost of my plan with decent # of minutes, unlimited texting and $30 data plan.) I find the touch-screen kind of annoying for phone calls and texting - I miss my old blackberry with the QWERTY keyboard.
