Has anyone sent their kids to the NASA Space Camp in Alabama? Just enrolled 12-yo daughter who loves space and hoping to hear any helpful tips or what to expect or etcetera. Thank you! I’ll also report back in July after! |
DS went back in '22. Absolutely loved it. he wanted to go back, but our schedule didn't allow for it last summer. Pre-order any gear/extras that you'd like as the lines are quite long to purchase when you are there. My son still keeps in contact with a few of his bunkmates! We drove him there, and he flew back. I was worried about this, but the staff handled it wonderfully, and there were many other children on the flight back to Reagan with him. Well worth the money for us! |
How old was he? |
13 |
Thanks. I've been eyeing space camp for years and was considering sending my kid as soon as he was eligible. However, as we got closer to 10 years old, I felt he might be a bit on the young side if the intent was for him to get the most out of the experience. Having already attended camp, would you have sent your kid before 13? |
Probably, there were groups for younger kids. I would hesitate because I would be nervous having him fly home. Though in hindsight, I know now how great the staff is with flights and making sure every child gets to where they need to go. |
Thank you for this! Ordering the gear/merch now. I was going to wait to see what she might like once there, but it’s great to know to order it ahead and skip stressful lines. Thanks!

Our daughter has a friend who did this as a tween and really enjoyed it. |
She'll make more money as a quantitative in a trading firm or a tech lawyer. Am I preaching to the right choir. |
Son went for three years. He did Aviation Challenge 1 and 2 and traditional Space Camp. It’s a lot of fun and you do see other campers on the plane leaving from DCA. Buy all the gear and snack packs ahead of time. Tell your daughter to try and get a bottom bunk so she can get an outlet to charge her phone. The food is so so in the cafeteria so maybe bring snacks from home. Lots of bug spray and sunscreen |
Our 11-year-old will be attending Space Camp for the first time summer too! Super excited. Thank you for the tips to buy gear/snacks ahead of time. What do kids do for bedding? Is a sleeping bag and pillow sufficient? Or do kids actually bring sheet sets and blankets? |
friends daughter did space camp for like 5 years running, they adored it. |
