HS study period for remote course

Anonymous
Does anyone know if a HS student can take a study period and then replace the class with an independent study thru another institution? My kid has an interest in a language not taught in MCPS and it doesn’t look like dual enrollment will work for this. I found a virtual class from a university that looks very good but would want him to take one less class with McPS to have time to do that work.

There is no "study hall" period that students can take during the school day. Why would a public school pay a teacher to literally babysit students taking courses at another institution? If your student is a junior or senior, you could see if they qualify for an abbreviated schedule, but they would have to leave the building to take their online class.

Huh? Yes there are study hall periods. What are you talking about? Do you have a kid in high school?

I would think you have to ask your particular school. And, you might have to provide your own computer/hot spot as MCPS computers are locked down. I've been curious about this as our school doesn't offer a lot of extra classes in one area.

Is there any issue with taking less than 7 classes if one is a sophomore? Asduming you can meet all your minimum requirements because of credits carried over from MS?
