Will parents ever be happy with grading?

Will parents ever be happy with grading?
They are now mad that some schools are no longer grading homework.
BUT they also get mad when homework is graded..
They get mad if something isn't graded but then they get mad if something is graded...
They get mad that Summative are not enough of the grade or they are too much of a grade.....
so what's the deal? Will parents ever be happy with the grading?

Before they changed the grading policy that homework can't be no more than 10% of the grades, they will get mad because it was 25% worth of the grade, and test were only 50%
Now test test are weighted way more because parents kept complaining, and they are kids who are great test takers and don't do any outside work so this helps them,
but kids who don't test well are not doing well in class because of this....

75% of parents will be fine with whatever
20% of parents will be fine with reasonable choices
5% of parents will never be happy with anything, or only happy with things that benefit their child.

Unfortunately, the 5% are the loudest.

Like participation points were worth 10% and no one ever got below C.. Most everyone will get B and A's. So it a very easy grade

I was posting "TRUTH!" to the above post. Not to the other person who also responded at 10:59

I will be happy when grading is common sense. No changing of grades without extra work. Grading of homework, classwork, quizzes and tests, grading related to content taught, and reasonable timeframe for grading work. A wide variety of skills graded to both measure effort and skill and to teach good work practices. We lost common sense in schools a long time ago so I have little faith it will go back to something reasonable.

There was just a report on schools closing because too many people are switching out of public schools. In addition to the groups mentioned then, there is an entire group that is no longer participating in public grades in society. I do not think that the 75% of parents who do not care about anything is a strength. I think the 20% of parents who care and want something reasonable probably speak better for the group that has left the school system and that other 75% doesn't care either way, so why is anyone catering to them? They are the ones checked out of schools.

We've strayed away from the purpose of K-12 education. School should be for developing the next generation of informed citizens with a strong foundation of basic knowledge and skills for life in the 21st century. Instead it is treated as a competitive screening process where getting more arbitrary points than the classmate sitting next to you is the number one priority.
It's no wonder that top universities are placing the focus away from grades and weighing holistic achievements and essays more heavily.

Are parents upset about grading? My kid is only ever upset when she her work is not graded and/or returned in a reasonable amount of time. And by that, I mean like 2 months.

What I dearly wish is that all schools within the school system had uniform policies about well, anything really. Teacher A allows retakes up to 100 points for anyone that chooses to do so, while Teacher B allows retakes only up to 85 after the kids have done corrections and additional work, while Teacher C calls corrections on a previous test a re-take.

I want my kid to be assigned homework. At this point, I don't care if it's graded or not. Just assign it. I will make sure it's done. We are at Madison H.S. It doesn't matter what the grading policy is because I'm sure it will change again next year, because it's changed every year for 5 years. What the grade means varies based on teacher. Somehow a few amazing teachers are managing to do what they've always done even in this sick system (Thank You!). In other classes, the exams have even changed so that kids don't have to know that much anymore. Those of us with older students can directly compare old materials with what we are seeing now.

So I would like to return to something that resembles normalcy and putting academics and students first instead of the constant tinkering to get a desired outcome. This desired outcome does not seem to have anything to do with students learning, but would qualify our principal for being a leader in equity grading in FCPS. What is happening here is truly damaging students that already experienced academic learning loss during Covid. At some point, this will translate into an economic loss for them.

I have never ever complained about grading but it would be nice if grading happened in a timely manner, grading reflected actual knowledge (grade inflation is huge) and if teachers are requiring work to be done- it should be graded.

But here is another teacher post where parents are the problem.

No, they just respect the teachers as professionals when it comes to grading. And they realize that their kids are judged within the context of their own school, so it doesn't particularly matter when it comes to college admissions.

I’m glad my kid is a straight A student and does all his work so I don’t have to worry if homework is graded or not, if it’s 10% or 25% of the grade, or whatever nonsense y’all are screaming about.

Then there is the IB language program where the kids do great on all the in class work but then the test comes and it has all this content that students have never seen so they get a D on it. And teacher’s response is that she’s using old IB tests as their in-class exams, so hopefully they will do better as the year progresses. (What?! But those “old IB tests” are end-of-year exams, and were only in January!) Yeah yeah….we’ll students just need to listen to some podcasts and read the news in that language so that eventually they’ll start to learn enough of the language to do better on the tests.
Makes no sense because meanwhile it’s just supposed to be fine that student is getting a C?
