I do not recommend Potomac Valley in Rockville. The aids are wonderful. But the nurses always seem annoyed by any request. They were unable to get my dads meds correct. They would be dispensed incorrectly. He was still cognizant and would correct them and the nurses would argue with him. Outside medications were not allowed to be brought into the facility but the pharmacy they used was unable to provide one of my dads medications.
From a dietary perspective it seemed that what was ordered and what was delivered were never the same. My dad was on a low sodium diet and bacon and eggs showed up every day. The slip on the tray would state Low Sodium and after a few days of complaining it also started to say No Bacon/Sausage. Yet there it was on the tray. When the issue was pointed out, it was met with defensiveness...."I just deliver the food, I didn't make it". That's true but it does speak to the quality control throughout the facility.
Overall communication between staff and between staff and family was very poor. When I needed to take my dad to drs appts I would arrive an hour before we needed to leave. I would inform the staff of the upcoming appt earlier in the week and remind them again the day before. I was assured he would be ready. However, when I would get there to pick him up they would run around trying to find everything that he would need--oxygen, wheelchair, paperwork. It was like I just showed up there and announced he had an appointment and this was the first anyone heard of it.
I went away for the weekend and when I came back, he was on oxygen. It took 2 days to get the story as to why he was on O2 and what needed to happen next. It was the PT that explained it, not the nurse, the case manager, or the dr.
And on discharge day, we worked with the case manager to arrange O2 for home. We could not bring him home without it. The case manager set discharge for 5pm because thats when Roberts said they would bring the O2 to the facility and then we could take him home. Admissions had an incoming patient and they packed him up and moved him to the dining room. When I called the case manager to explain what was happening, it was news to her.
I don't know that these things wouldn't happen at any other facility. I know there is a labor shortage and these positions don't pay that well. In hindsight, I wish I had brought my dad home with 24x7 home health aids rather than subjecting him to rehab. Perhaps other facilities are better run.
