Is there an "Uber-like" service or private, oncall rideshare for the elderly that serves Maryland? My active mom who is 84 has decided it's time for her to stop driving, so she needs a service like Uber that's really geared more towards elderly or those more vulnerable. She is non-technology completely. She has a flip phone only which she uses for emergencies, so she's not going to be using apps to order an Uber/Lyft so it has to be a service where she can just pick up the phone and call them as needed. My google search came up with a company called Hop Skip Drive, I've never heard of them. Any feedback or ideas? If it helps she lives in the suburbs so taking a bus is not an option nor is it really safe anymore. I live across the country otherwise I would be driving her where she needs to go.
Thanks in advance! |
The county has a variety of transportation programs for the elderly and disabled.
https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/DOT-Transit/special-transportation/ I know one of my neighbors uses this to get to appointments. |
Thank you PP, but my mom doesn't feel safe nor do I feel safe having her take in the Ride-On bus. She doesn't need or qualify for subsidized transportation - finances are not an issue, so the Call-n-Ride service really should be reserved for those who cannot afford to pay, and the Metro Access service is for disabled. My mom is very able-bodied. She is active, and cognitively 100% there. She just no longer feels comfortable driving on roads with so many aggressive drivers. thanks again. |
Why not just call a cab? |
I don't know, that is why I'm here asking. She's never had to rely on this type of transportation and with living in the suburbs is not used to seeing taxis driving around. I haven't used a taxi in maybe 10+ years myself so I'm not even sure how safe or reliable they are since it seems they've been pushed out by the likes of Uber and Lyft. |
Does Go Go Grandparent serve this area? |
OP here. I actually looked at them yesterday. I input her address and they do not serve her area. She is in outer Silver Spring. |
Most economical option would a local stay at/work from home woman who can use a side gig.

My 80 year old Dad started using Uber a few years ago and is now friendly with a few older drivers and uses them exclusively. |
*limo service is another option |
That's sweet. |
Give her the phone number for Barwood. |
OP here - I love this. I guess that is what I'm hoping will happen, that my mom will find a particular driver she likes and feels safe with. Out of curiosity, how does your dad connect with the same few drivers? Doesn't the app assign the drivers? Or are these drivers off of the "uber clock" when they drive for your dad? |
When one stops driving, its time to start looking for senior homes. She'll have easy access to transportation and socialization. |
My mother is 85 and does not speak English. She uses Uber to get around during the week to her medical appointments. There is a feature in Uber for her to notify us as soon as she calls an Uber, so we know where/when she is going, and who is driving her(car type, driver name, license plate). She always checks the license plate before she gets on it. |
