Handyman price check

Anonymous
I haven’t used a handyman in a long time because I’m usually the handy one. I’m pregnant and will not be getting on a ladder and my husband is not a handy guy so I just called one out for an estimate to: replace 4 ceiling fans with new ceiling fans, replace a pantry door, replace a rotting wood sash, install security flood lights above the garage. He quoted me $2500. This does not include any materials. That’s way too much right?

That seems really high without materials.

I’d have to break it down. It took me two hours to assemble and install a new ceiling fan, so to do four is a day’s work. I’m not sure how long the other projects would take.

It seems like at least three days total., maybe longer?

In my area they're charging $50/hr.

How many hours work ?

Sounds right. That’s about what I pay my cleaning lady.

That sounds like two full days of work at least. A regular handyman may not have the skills and tools to replace a rotten sash. My guess is that he does not want the job or thinks it migjt take him 3-4 days.

I met with a Handyman expecting to have some decision making power. Instead he showed me his schedule and said he would do what he could to fit me in 3 weeks. He didn't need me to bend to my wishes. He had plenty of work.

My guess is an hour per fan, an hour or two to install a pantry door and an hour for the sash, 30 minutes for flood lights. So it’s a days worth of work. If handymen are even getting $100 an hour it shouldn’t be more than $700 not including materials.

A handyman is way more skilled than a cleaning lady.

too much. I'm guessing my handyman could do all that for under $1K.

So even if you doubt it the pricing still is off.
