I’m seeing threads where people suggest colleges are (or will) draw a negative inference if a kid submits their application test optional, UNLESS the kid is from California because the UC schools are test blind.
But there are SAT and ACT test centers in California and there are colleges in California that are not test blind. California kids can and do take the SAT and ACT all the time. So, why would California kids be viewed differently than other kids in terms of a negative inference being drawn if they go test optional? |
| There are a lot fewer test centers in CA per capita than other states and it is difficult to get access to them. The number of CA students taking either test has decreased since both the UC system and Cal State systems went test blind. Cal Tech also test blind. |
|
And California has 40 million people. It's a huge state.
There really aren't a lot of students taking tests anymore in California. Makes things weird for everyone. |
| It’s also not unusual in California to have to drive 3+ hours to take one of these tests. |
| The private schools in CA offer the SAT and ACT to students, it’s the commoners who have to travel or go out of state to take the tests. |
It’s not just UC schools…it’s Cal State schools, CalTech and a bunch of other CA privates. I guarantee if all VA state schools and various VA private schools were test blind, you would have a massive drop in VA students testing and they would be viewed similarly. |
This. We’re not in CA but close in the SW. If you’re not in a city or private school that offers it you could have to drive for hours to take it. |
Kind of silly just to keep the College Board afloat and relevant. |
| UC schools only started going test blind since COVID. There were plenty of places to test before that. |
| We should all do this and put the college board money making monopoly out of business. |
| If you are in CA and are a 'disadvantaged' student, as in discriminated against in college admissions (e.g. Asian, Indian, White) you should take the test. Gives you a leg up when you apply to colleges in saner parts of the country. |
Yeah.. and spend 20 times that money on tutors to shore your GPA and another 40x to college admissions consultants to fakeify your ECs and write pithy essays for you. win-win.

Ignorant statement. |
Or you lack reading comprehension. |
From what town is it 3+ hours to a test center? |
