PSA: tell your teen job/internship applicant to check their email

Anonymous
At my office we are looking to “hire” a couple of unpaid high school student interns through a program aimed at helping high schoolers gain internship experience. We received a number of applications with resumes and cover letter emails. We contacted a few to invite for a video interview, and only one out of four got back to us within a couple of days. I’m told by multiple people that it’s because teens don’t use email so they don’t think to check it.

Next time I’ll ping them via text to check their email for communication from us, but in the meantime I’m throwing it out there to remind your job- and internship-seekers to check their email!

And tell them to check their voicemail…. Mine did not recognize a phone number and ignored the call. They had no clue how to check VM.

Well most high school teens aren't looking for unpaid work. They don't really need the "experience" until college or later. They need money for college.

True, but they are doing this special program that makes them no cost to the employer. I don’t k is of the program gives them a stipend or what. They put together application packets and applied, so they should be told to check their email for any potential responses. This logic holds for paid and unpaid positions.

Good point about voicemail, PP!

They don’t want the job, Janet.

Who are these teens who you think don’t use email? The Amish?

My 24 DS barely checks his VM. It's just not a primary method of communication for that age and younger.

I meant email... not VM.

Pay them. Unpaid labor is ridiculous.

Competitive internships have no trouble getting responses.

No one is your "internship" interested enough to reply.

My husband says his employees are the same way

Then why did they apply? You're missing her point.

My kid with unpaid internships just got ED to a top college.

If they don't use email, how well do you think they will fit in or will you start a using performative TikTok dance videos for communication?

+1 also tell them to check their emails for college interviews. I had to email a student four times, text and call them to get a reply back for a college interview.

Big whoop

Mine got paid for their part time job and had same results

Unpaid work is absolutely ridiculous. Reading your paycheck learning about taxes is a life skill
