My son is an 8th grader. He was just presented an option for 9th grade that was English 9 honors or World civ honors (combo of history and English). He's our oldest, so we're just learning what HS courses will look like. Is there a preferrable path for a kid looking to take a strong course load? TIA. |
Are you at AP school or IB? |
| AP. Woodson. |
| Is world civil listed on the transcript as an English class? If not, it will look like they only have three years of English which is not ideal |
| World Civ use to love giving out Ds. Check re: the typical grade distribution for your HS. |
Which HS? Where do you find that grade distribution?? |
|
My son came from AAP - and he and his friends all are taking english 9 honors now.
World civ honors sounds interesting but I think it's off the standard track if you're not taking it as an elective. |
Same question. Where do find the grade distribution for HS? Child is in 8th currently, so never heard about this. |
Is English 9 honors difficult coming from AAP? |
Generally, no. But everything is teacher dependent. |

Rising Chantilly freshman. I heard the block at Chantilly is very writing intensive. It’s also a larger class with like 60 kids in a very large room. Lots of group projects and collaboration. Not for my kid. We are doing separate English 9 Honors and Wold Hist/Geog 1 HN.
I thought it sounded good and the teachers got positive reviews, but my kid doesn’t like group work. Ultimately I let my kid decide. |

World Civ just means that your HN World History and HN English 9 classes are team taught by an English and History Teacher. They have the class everyday -- in the block schedule at our school it's either 1/2 period, 7/8 period I think.
Theoretically, the teachers teach together -- but in my child's experience, the content is still taught pretty separately -- the history teacher instructs and tests on history, the english teacher instructs and tests on english. I'm sure there's more overlap and coordination between the teachers than that, but they still have to ensure that all of the content is taught. In my child's class they earn 1 combined grade, but get that grade for both English and History. So if you're not doing well it can hurt you in both classes. It is a huge class -- about 60 kids total, so that may be tough for some kids. |
| As PP said, check the teachers. County-wide the teachers who teach this particular team-taught class where it’s offered seem to have a reputation for being tougher graders than most teachers, for some reason. |
Is English 9 Honors difficult coming from regular English 8? |
So class is almost 3 hours? If 2 blocks together? Yikes! |
