Why are the MoCo libraries closed for MLK day both Sunday and Monday?

Anonymous
No other business is closed for 2 days for this one day holiday. Why is this?

I went to the library today and there was a sign on the door saying all the mcpl’s are closed both Sunday and Monday for the holiday. I assumed it would be closed tomorrow but today?

Maybe in the past they’ve found that so few people visit the library on the Sunday of 3 day weekends that it’s not worth staffing the libraries. It save the County money.

It’s a county job so I’m sure the employees are being paid regardless of the fact that they are closed.

I am so amazed by the selection and programming in libraries here compared to where I am from, that I don’t mind these things.

Maybe they want their employees to enjoy a 3-day weekend like everybody else.

Op,
Can they enjoy 2 days too?

They've been doing this a long time, also not sure why.

I don't begrudge the staff the time off, it's just the way it is.

Because librarians get time off too

Because of library funding

We lived in NC for a long time libraries were never open on Sunday do you know what a pain that was for two working parents

The local libraries have been doing that a lot lately.

It’s because people like OP don’t even go to the library Or they would realize that they take Sunday and Monday on a lot of holiday weekends….. Including Labor Day, Memorial Day, Presidents’ Day, veterans Day, and MLK day

Do part time county employees get paid holidays?

Arlington County library was packed today. Appreciate it was open. I can understand giving staff an extra day on the occasional weekend.

Op here. I am actually at the library probably once a week. But it’s quite possible I have never been on one of the holiday weekends you mentioned. We are working parents so the weekends are pretty much the only times we can go so yeah we were disappointed today. I was expecting them to be closed tomorrow for the holiday. But obviously wasn’t expecting them to be closed today as well for the same holiday.
