where do you buy house plants?

Looking for some house plants. Probably parlor palm, bromeliad, calathea, maybe a succulent. I know not to go to Home Depot, have heard too much about bugs. Do you just go to a local nursery/garden center? Order online from a plant specific website (the sill, rooted, etc.)?

Merrifield Garden has a good selection of plants for indoors and outdoors.

+1, this is where to go for "fancy" plants but, FYI, they can still have bugs. I usually get mine at Home Depot and have only gotten bugs once.

Also, I go to the Kensington Farmers Market and the plant person there often has houseplants. I just watered two I bought from her that are doing really well. Saturday mornings. She comes in winter unless it’s below freezing, I think.

Sill on Bethesda Row is great, they have everything sectioned by level of care needed, light level and the people there are really knowledgeable.

OP here, thank you!

At such high prices, we expect no bugs on plants. Doesn’t hurt to inspect the whole plant before paying for them.

I ordered a bunch, including some pretty large ones, from Little Leaf and had them delivered. I think LL closed, but Rewild is similar and delivers.

Plants Alive in Silver Spring. Great but pricey.

The online places won’t ship in freezing weather.

Botanologica in Falls church. My Arlington Buy Nothing group has a lot of people who propagate plants.

Good Earth in Potomac. Rewild DC opened a location in Potomac too. There’s also American Plant. Agree Plants Alive is a bit pricey. I would also be extra careful to check for bugs there. I had to put several plants back after noticing mealy bugs/white flies infesting the plant.

Whenever you buy a new houseplant, even if you don't see bugs, you should isolate that plant for at least a week better two away from your other houseplants.

Bugs happen even in the stock at very pricey nice places. Bugs can be managed/eradicated by appropriate means, typically soapy water does the trick. Isolate new plants, always.

I pick up my houseplants at the grocery store, HD, Lowe's, and a local florist with a great selection - but she is pricey so I don't stop in there often.

Way too pricey for what they are offering. I like the Sill and Rewild.
