Hi Jeff,
I've been on DCUM since I got pregnant early last year. I can't tell you how grateful I am for the generous and useful advice I've gotten from other moms about pregnancy and being a first time mom to a young baby. I'm always amazed at the willingness of moms to want to help each other out. However...I've often been disheartened by the level of disrespect expressed in most discussions related to 2 topics: a) working vs being a stay at home mom and b) breastfeeding vs formula feeding. Here's an example of a thread that turned really ugly http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/117102.page. Often, these threads (like the one I just pointed to) start off unrelated to the actual "debate" of BF vs FF, but often end up with vicious attacks and necessary nasty back and forths. This mom was just looking for advice on how to handle a specific situation. I think it may be worth thinking about splitting these topics 2 particular topics into the following 4 forums: __Breastfeeding: A supportive forum for moms who are breastfeeding __Formula Feeding: A supportive forum for formula fed babies __Stay at Home Moms: A supportive forum for moms who have chosen to stay at home __Working Moms: A supportive forum for moms who are working and also raising children Folks can then report posters who are inappropriate and attack personal choices. I know it will probably require additional amount of time and energy, but it may help minimize the amount of insults and put-downs. Most moms who are posting about any of these topics are looking for advice and support, but more often than not, end up being attacked. |
Sorry for the typo! I meant "unnecessary nasty back and forths" |
