Cheap dinner spot by U St. metro?

Anonymous
I'm meeting a friend there for dinner, and she cannot walk far, so it should be within a couple of blocks. Thanks for any suggestions!

Probably not the atmosphere you're looking for, but you can't beat Ben's Chili Bowl for cheap eats! And it's right across the street from the metro.

Sala Thai, Alero, Ulah Bistro (literally next to the exit at 13th).

OP here. We aren't looking for anything fancy at all, and my friend is pregnant, so she just might be up for Ben's...though I was hoping for something slightly healthier, so keep the suggestions coming!

I am so tired of all the trendy people who suddenly discovered Ben's, it used to be a great palce when a white person woudl walk in and people would be like hmm look what the wind blew in, now they just say hmmm another person trying to think they are cool eating in the hood.

PP, would you like to institute a "blacks only" policy at Ben's, is that what you're saying? Good luck with that!

Eating a hot dog smothered with greasy chili = cool and trendy.

if cheap is what you are looking for, try CHIX at 11th street, just north of U Street. It's a nice little cafe with outdoor seating. Serves chicken with a variety of sides. Nice employees.

No but I bet $100 you would not have gone there 20 years ago or anywhere on U St. and yes I worked on U st for several years back then.

You're right, I wouldn't have gone there 20 years ago because I lived in Pittsburgh 20 years ago. But guess what? I've never set foot in Ben's during the 10 years I've lived in DC now, either, and I do frequent the U St. area.

You're also right that things have changed in the area in 20 years. Stop being a curmudgeon and get over it.

We like Dukem for Ethiopian--corner of U and 12th.

NP here. PP while I appreciate very much your sentiment about white people trying to look cool (I'm sick of it too), I think you should give the poster who suggested it a break. The OP was asking about cheap places to eat, not hip places to eat.

i agree that ben's is way, WAY overhyped. the chili dogs are good, but there's just way too many white people out there trying to look hip by saying they eat there or referring their friends there. and yes, i'm lumping the person who originally suggested ben's, since if they knew the place well they would know it always has a ferocious line, and the OP specifically said their dinner companion can't walk far, so why suggest a place where you have to stand in line for 20 minutes for a chili dog and then hover over a table, waiting to pounce on it as soon as the people who are there stand up?

signed, white person.

and by the way, sala thai is very good.

what about Busboys and Poets or Eatonville? Both are just two blocks away at 14th and V. If you are going on a Friday or Saturday night, many of the restaurants will be crowded. If you go to Chix (a good option if other places are packed), there is lots of seating upstairs.
