Internal or external hire situation

Anonymous
I took a role under my boss who left mere days in. I got decently good at the job, and was interviewed 2 days ago as a potential internal hire. They're looking at one other candidate who is insanely great on paper, he has the exact same credentials as me plus 2 more in the field and he's already a manager in the field (but why is he switching if that's the case?). My ex boss was great on paper too but was awful at soft skills. I'm screwed aren't I? I have another interview lined up next week. I'm just so tired of having multiple degrees and certs and somehow it's not always enough, it's happened at another job where they made me move from a window office to a windowless office and this is happening here. What would you do? I couldn't get more certs last year because I was on maternity leave, pumping, healing, dealing with bad ppm depression and it feels I never get a break...

You are worrying about something that hasn't happened regarding issues that are beyond your control in this moment.

That's a waste of time and unneeded worry.

You have to let this play out - it will be what it will be - all the cards are on the table and the hand needs to be played.

That's the first thing.

Then, if it doesn't pan out, come back here and complain/worry then and we can discuss next steps. Maybe another cert might help - maybe not. Maybe more "grinding" with a purpose/eye on where you want to be and what you should be doing now to get to this end state.

I would try to work into the interview how well you are working with the team, etc. Whatever advantages you think you offer by being in the seat already versus the other candidate.

You need to work on exuding more confidence - both internally to yourself, and then will come through externally with the interviewer. It’s not about # of certs. As the internal candidate you already hold home court advantage and should play to that.
