What's this rubber thing and do I need to use it?

I got two glass jars and both came with a rubber thing. How do I use it? What's it for? Do I need to use it? It makes it harder to fasten the jar.

OP here - in case this is important, I just store pasta or things like that in the jar. Not like, sauce or soup or any sort of liquid.

It helps seal it for freshness

It's the seal so it will be airtight

It's to get an air tight seal when canning, you don't need to use it if you just storing dry food.
