PreCalc and Calc A/B or Honors PreCalc and Calc B/C?

Anonymous
DC is in 9th grade and is taking Honors Alg 2. They received an A in the first quarter and has a high B for the interim grade. They take all honors courses and mostly gets A’s. Does not know what they want to study in college.

Will there be any regrets doing the PreCalc and Calc A/B route in terms of college admissions and course of study in college?

Non-honors precalc is not preparation for Calculus AB.
It is preparation for "Calculus with Applications" (calculus for marketing majors).

Calc AB vs BC will have no impact on college unless you take a class that is too hard and fail to learn and then continue the cycle in later years.

That is not correct. At least at some high schools non honors Precalc is a prerequisite for AP Calc AB.

Check the situation at your school. At ours Calc B/C is extremely difficult and very strong math students struggle

I'd recommend honors pre-calc (with the option to drop down in september if you feel necessary) and then postponing the decision of AB vs BC calc until this time next year.

Wrong on both fronts.

My DC - and many others - are doing fine in AB Calc after regular pre calc. Is Honors better prep? Yes. But regular is adequate for capable kids.

If you’re looking at T25 in hard stem or business, BC is something AOs notice, if available at your school. And maybe beyond T25 for CS and engineering.

Very common to take regular precal and go to AB.

DC most likely doing the regular precal and AB. They will be able to master the fewer topics covered in regular precalc rather than rushing through honors and possibly not picking up the math.

At our school, the teacher said only one student had an A in Calc AB. She said you are doing well in the class if you receive a B.

My 9th grader (A in Honors Alg 2 so far) is planning on Honors Pre Calc in 10th and AP Calc A/B in 11th. Is this not a common path?

Maybe its a bad teacher issue.

That teacher is being ridiculous. Should not be so stingy with As

There is nothing wrong at all with taking AB junior year and BC senior year. That is a strong math curriculum that shows rigor. The Honors will give a slight weighted GPA boost sophomore year, but it's most important that your kid do well in all classes and really learn the material rather than struggle in an honors class and not learn the material.

Calc BC is more common with the track you laid out.

What would they take in 12th? BC or Stats?
