My DS has decent scores - NNAT 129, Cogat 134 - and we sent in good work samples. In a lower SES school, he would probably get in to AAP, but at our high SES school (that I've seen in pool stats posted for), he probably won't get in. So my question is...what would his chances be of getting in on appeal if we send additional work samples in? |
You need an additional test if you have to appeal IMO. |
What are the rest of his cogat scores? How are his iready scores? |
Where are the "in pool" stats posted by school? |
They are not posted. |
Disagree. I successfully appealed without any additional tests. The key is to convince the committee that your kid's needs can't be met in a regular classroom. It's tricky to figure out how to go about doing that, but you should craft your parent letter and supporting documents to try to prove to the committee that your kid needs AAP placement. Simply showing that your kid is smart or that your kid would be successful in AAP isn't enough. |
I don't think you need to worry about an appeal with those scores and good work samples. |
Maybe but it's fine if they do. I know a lot of kids get in on appeals. |
OP says they were "posted" |
What are you talking about? What additional test? |
NP but would it help to write in your appeal letter that your child was new to the school, had a teacher on maternity leave and multiple subs so no one actually got to know them well? Would appeal help in that situation? |
Your best argument is always going to be new information that the committee did not have at the time of the original decision. In most cases, that's another test result or more work samples. |
Quoted PP here. I would not want to come across as criticizing the school or AART in any way. Focus on the positive things about your child and why they need AAP to reach their full potential. I don't know what they have on the HOPE form, but the old GBRS form had a lot of characteristics that the AAP panel wants to see. Pick some of those and talk about how your child demonstrates the trait. It helps if you have some work samples that illustrate the trait, so you can refer to them in your letter. Be specific about what your child needs and how your child is not able to receive what they need in the regular classroom. I would try to work in that your child was new to the school. If your child is also quiet or shy, I would find a way to work that in as well. If there are any areas identified as weaker in the HOPE form, I would add a work sample or commentary showing strength in that area. |
You give new information so that the committee can reconsider their decision. Give them something. They have to create a paper trail of BS to make this all seem legit. |
Threaten to sue and your kid will get in with those scores…. |
