NYT article on Singulair

So many sad stories in the article.

Years ago, I was prescribed use for asthma and after just a couple of weeks thought I was losing my mind. While on it, I had horrific, psychedelic nightmares that I couldn’t wake from. I was so angry when I realized the cause! I could breathe better than ever, but obviously it was not sustainable. No one warned me about it and I was stupidly lazy about reading inserts back then.

Anyone else have trouble with it?

Both of my sons had massive anxiety while on it - even short term. This was when they were 5 and 7. HATED it.

I credit DCUM with giving me warnings about Singulair. Years ago my young child was prescribed this, and I searched it up on DCUM, and several people noted these psychiatric concerns. Raised the concerns with pediatrician, who dismissed them, but I never gave it to my child. The risks are low but they are real. Shows the value of a site like this one, because it's the only way I found out about the side effects.

I was prescribed it for a small issue.

Before I picked it up, I read all the crazy stuff about it.

I decided not to get it.

I wonder what made that PA suggest it for my small (but annoying) issue (which eventually went away on its own).

That PA i had no experience with. I had a year with different insurance and just did my checkup with a random place. *Now I feel that whole office was shady.

No trouble but it didn't help. I had that experience on Robitussin.

I chose to do allergy shots for my kid instead of singulair. Shots are all natural— just a tiny bit of the allergen administered, built up over time.

People are very quick to dismiss medication side effects! My grandmother developed psychosis due to Cipro.

My normally kind and even tempered husband becomes unbearably mean and nasty on it. I seriously think about divorce during every heavy allergy season. Unfortunately it’s the only thing that works when his allergies are at their worst.

On the flip side, I took it for years and years with no issue.

I've taken it for years with no side effects. Of course I believe that other people have experienced serious side effects, but it helps me a lot.

Caused anxiety with me, stopped that fast.

I wish more people understood this. Yes it's a pain to go get them, but the most effective, least side effect therapy.

It takes time to work. My kid took singulair for a couple years while simultaneously starting allergy shots. Took 3 years until the shots had done enough to discontinue the singular. Fortunately he had no side effects from it that we know of.

Before singulair and shots he was on steroids for a week and that was no fun either.

For my son and I it is a lifesaver when allergy season is at it's worst.

I went to several allergists and all refused shots.
