Which is in my best interest- work as a part time employees of multiple businesses or a contracted consultant?

I had success starting and growing a small service based business, but have recently moved on and the partner took over fully.

Now, I have a handful of businesses in the same industry asking for my help. They basically are not yet at a point where they want to hire a FT employee, but need help with random tasks from streamlining processes to taking their initial client intro calls.

Tax and finance wise, is it better for me to be an employee of multiple small businesses or should I set up some sort of LLC and work as an independent consultant?

LLL C. Dont be a W2 employee.

Go independent. Much simpler along with many tax benefits. And it’s much easier for the companies as well.

LLC all the way. You can charge as a B2B entity and so the various clients don't take you on as an employee expense. Basically, whatever an employer pays you in salary cost them approximately 30% more because of what the employer needs to pay in taxes for an employee. Go make that money for yourself, especially since they may only need you short term.
