| There’s a new Facebook group (Saving Pets One Pet @ a Time) collecting reports of dogs and cats who’ve gotten sick from Purina dog and cat food. I’ve been giving my dog Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach/Skin Salmon & Rice, but now I want to switch. Would love some suggestions for other brands of dog food that are good quality and a reasonable price for my 60 lb doodle. Thank you. |

What specifically is happening with Purina? It's had a good reputation for a long time.
I feed Purina now, but used to feed Canidae and was happy. |
| There’s nothing wrong with Purina. Talk to your vet, OP. |
| There are a couple different Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach formulas featuring salmon. One of them has sickened numerous dogs, but the other formulas have been fine. I believe the salmon and rice formula is the one that has had problems. I feed my dog the one that doesn’t have rice in the name (just salmon) for adult large breeds. (The bad features a GSD.) There haven’t been problems with that formula. HTH |
Sorry, that should say the *bag that I use that’s been fine features a GSD. |
What, specifically? Is this that some random people have had dogs get sick on a certain food or is this something that's been reported, investigated and resulting in a recall? I've seen nothing in the news and we use it daily. Pro Plan Sport Salmon and Rice. No issues. |

There's an older group called "PURINA PET FOOD is STILL KILLING or SICKENING Dogs and Cats!" I find that the people in those groups think any name brand that comes form a major company is bad. I wouldn't put too much though into it other than doing your own research. Purina Pro is recommended by most vets and is considered one of the better kibbles.
I have a 2-year-old, 60-pound standard poodle. He's been eating this for the last 7 months with no problem.

| My dog has had no problems with Purina. She’s 9. |
| Dog Food Advisor has ratings for all commercially available foods. If your dog is doing fine on Purina and there isn’t a recall you may not have to switch. |
| It is not true..... |
I’m 01:01 and the formula pictured above is what I feed my dog, not the one that’s been making dogs sick. Read the one star reviews on the salmon and rice formula. They’re more recent reviews. https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-adult-sensitive-skin/dp/767798

We'd been feeding our large breed puppy the purina pro plan formula for large breed dogs. I'd noticed that his poops were always soft, but figured it was because he ate everything on the ground he could get in his mouth. When it was time to order the adult version, I decided not to because the reviews on chewy were awful. Lots of complaints about recent problems.
Anyway, we ended up with Kirkland brand and it's been good (and no more soft poops). |
Dog Food Advisor is a crackpot: a retired oral surgeon. No veterinary training, and certainly no training in veterinary nutrition. The new internet rumors about Purina are baseless. If you want to change your dog's food, make sure the new food is WSAVA compliant. |
