service hours in middle school

Can someone please walk me through service hours like i'm 5? Do middle school kids need it? I think I heard only for NJHS? Or only for 8th grade? DS is in 7th and has done a few things recently that would qualify for service hours but he doesn't know anything about the process. Not sure if they haven't told him anything or he wasn't listening and missed it. If he can get hours for stuff he's done already, what's the process for submitting? Did we miss the boat because someone would have had to sign something?

Nothing is mandatory. It’s all suggested.
There are suggested hours for 7th and 8th grade combined.
They log them in x2VOL. Their history teacher is supposed to explain and approve the hours.
