Depression from COVID or Paxlovid?

Anonymous
I have COVID and am taking Paxlovid. I’m not feeling all that sick, but feel super depressed and am crying a lot. I’m not normally like that.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I get anxiety and mental health issues for a few days after each vaccine. My kid got covid, and had a massive anxiety spike.

There may be something about covid that impacts mental health, but I haven't found the science to describe it.

I hope you feel better soon!

I did not take Paxlovid, but was depressed for a couple weeks the first time I had COVID. It reminded me of the baby blues after pregnancy. Super weepy and low mood.

Yes, an irritable, hopeless feeling only want to be alone. Post holidays doesn't help. Try to remind yourself this too will pass

^COVID. No meds. This was also before I knew I had COVID at all, was just really sick and hadn't tested

We get it, you don't like vaccines and would rather get covid.

Illness always does this to me. It’s an inflammatory thing (inflammation and depression are connected). Just be gentle with yourself. Don’t make any big decisions

I'm fully vaccinated, mask regularly, test regularly, and haven't ever had covid, and you're an idiot and an ass.

Clear now?

Can you point to the science of this? Sounds right, and I'd like to learn more.

If you Google you’ll find lots—it’s a fascinating connection and not that well understood but I do not think it’s a controversial idea at this point. I read a book (possibly this one but I’m not 100% sure: https://www.amazon.com/Inflamed-Mind-radical-approach-depression/dp/1780723504) in which the author, a scientist, felt depressed while healing after dental surgery and finally put together that it was caused by the inflammation. All my life, my first sign of illness, even a cold, has been an existential dread that comes on very fast, so it was fascinating to me.

Thanks! I'll start there.
