I am a parent of a child in 5th grade. Takoma Park’s magnet changed to a lottery during the pandemic, drawing from the top 15 percent. Is the Takoma Park cohort still good, now drawing from such a large pool? I also heard that Takoma Park used to be where all those kids with the really high Map-M scores went, making up a good chunk of the Blair magnet. Is that still true? Finally, if my child was applying before it was a lottery, what percentile of MAP-M scores generally were accepted (99, high 99, 97-99?)?
This year will be the first year that lottery middle school kids apply for high schools so it’s yet to be seen if a large proportion of the lottery selected TPMS magnet kids get in to the Blair magnet. Last year about 40 kids got in, but they weren’t selected through a lottery. When my kid was accepted before the pandemic he had 99 percentile MAP and 99 percentile COGAT. My younger child also had 99 percentile MAP-M (higher than sibling) and got in through the lottery.
It's still a G&T cohort, but fewer high-fliers than before. Nevertheless, some very bright and talented kids in this program who are able to do the work without having dumbed anything down.
Where does 270 fall on map m for 5th grade? 99 or high 99?
It doesn't matter. 270 gets you in pool no matter what ES you are coming from. |
