If you have had a miscarriage

Anonymous
I just had my 2nd ultrasound. Should be at 7.5 weeks, baby measure 6.5 weeks - no heartbeat. RE asked me to come in again next week just to confirm everything but obviously not a hopeful situation.

What is odd is that I know I will miscarry, but when will it happen? I have no "symptoms" and am weirded out knowing what is inside me.

I have heard of D&C but thought that was a very risky procedure - can I take a pill instead? Does insurance cover D&/pills etc.? I want to be able to start fertility treatments agains asap so whatever option is best, I will do. Thanks.

OP, I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had two miscarriages and D&Cs with both. It is under general anesthesia, so I suppose risky in that sense, but otherwise quite routine. And insurance paid, no questions asked. I now have two healthy kids, btw.
Hugs and Peace.

So sorry to hear this. I had an ultrasound at what I thought was almost 7 weeks but was closer to 6, even though we saw a heartbeat I was sure I would mc. 4 days later I asked for an us and no hb. It was my second mc, the first one stopped growing at 6 weeks but I found out at an 11 week ultrasound.
I chose the pills the first time and d&c the second. Much better to have the d&c, faster recovery faster period.
Good luck and hopefully you won't need either

17:03 so you know why you miscarried?

OP, so sorry that you are going through this. I know how hard it is as I went through the same experience.

You might not miscarry on your own or it will take too long. When the ultrasound confirmed at 8 weeks that my pregnancy was not viable, it took me two weeks to start feeling cramps and have light spotting. I didn't want to go through the agonizing experience of miscarriage, so I chose D&C. I recovered pretty fast from it and got my period within a month.

Sending you virtual hugs.

OP, I'm so sorry. It's really hard. I don't think a D&C is that risky; I actually have had both a D&C and taken misoprostol (a pill) to deal with prior m/cs. I preferred the D&C -- faster recovery, no dealing with the cramping/pain of "forcing" my body to have the m/c, and controlling the timing so I could get on with the rest of my life. I took misoprostol on a Sat. morning, m/c'd all weekend, and still had some pain through the early part of the next week. With the D&C, you could still bleed and have some light cramping aftwards, but it's "over" for the most part when the operation is (which is very quick and you are under general anesthesia, so you don't see/hear anything). Finally, the other advantage of the D&C is that your physician may be able to save the tissue to test if a chromosomal abnormality was the cause, which may help you decide how to continue TTC.

Anyhow, you need to do what is right for you but hopefully a little more information will help you make the choice. take care and again, so sorry for your loss.

I was farther along when I miscarried, so did not have the medical option. I opted for the D&C because I couldn't stand continuing to have the fetus inside of me, and, frankly, because I wanted to do genetic testing. The downside was that I had to wait 2 cycles after the D&C to try to get pregnant again (I was told by my OB that there is a slightly elevated increase of miscarriage after a D&C). If I miscarry again (I'm newly pregnant after that miscarriage), I may try to do it naturally--longer wait to get it over with, but faster to start trying again, and at my age, I don't have that long to wait.
I am really sorry for your loss; I know it feels awful to see that heartbeat and then come back and find none.

I'm sorry for your loss. I had a missed miscarriage two months ago and had the D&C. The procedure itself was quite easy, as others have said. It is under general anesthesia and the recovery is like a slightly-more-painful-than-normal period. I have also taken the pills and definitely recommend the D&C over that. Also if you are eager to get back in the "trying" game I would do the D&C. With a natural miscarriage you often bleed for much longer and from what I have read, anecdotally it seems to take the body longer to recover.

I was not told that getting of soon after d&c increases risks of mc. I got the go ahea from RE to try immediately.

Nothing to add, just wanted to say sorry for your loss. It does get better.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I've had both a D/C and a natural miscarriage. D/C was less painful and messy. I had a natural and didn't know I was PG. Ditto to comment about waiting 2 cycles. I had gotten pg after the D/C miscarriage (Dr. never mentioned waiting and we had fertility issues). Got PG, didn't know it until I miscarriaged - it was painful cramping - like mini-labor pains and messy. After a D/C the uterus needs to re-build a thicker lining so the advice to wait 2 months is important. Too many D/Cs can weaken the cervix.
