Virtual Snow Days

Now that MCPS has joined other districts in possibly holding virtual snow days, will you be requiring your children to attend? Classes won't start until at least 11am and be live for about 4.5 hours. I'm a former teacher and I'm leaning towards not having my kids join. By 11 they will already be in full snow day mode and I'm not dragging them inside to hop on a Chromebook. Just curious what others are thinking.

I am thinking they are unlikely to ever come to pass since it would only happen when snow days are exhausted and there’s like a well-forecasted blizzard.

I am also thinking that parents lost their minds over school loss during the pandemic so it would be mighty hypocritical to start clamoring for more time off in the unlikely extreme snow scenario where virtual school might be needed.

My kids won't do virtual anymore ever. It was a waste of time. I hate having them on the computer for that long. Most of the teachers just give a virtual assignment anyways because teachers also hate teaching virtually.

Definitely will make them attend, but my kids thrived in virtual because I was involved and didn't ignore them.

Nice not to have a job, huh?

I’m a teacher with two little kids at home. Daycare is closed when mcps closes for snow days. Will have to take those days off but zero percent chance any subs will be able to teach on Zoom, so not entirely sure what the counties plan is. Anyone know?

OP mcps has not said they will do this. Stop starting rumors.

+2 from each of my kids

Of course my kids will. They are required to go to school and will go. Virtual is no big deal.

Lots of precedent there. The clear answer to claim to hold class "asynchronously" while actually doing nothing. You must not have been around during the pandemic.

DP. Yes, they have said it will be an option:

An option that can never be implemented because of the MCEA contract.

Don't worry, OP. MCPS and MCEA both know virtual is a joke, and it's too much work to even pretend otherwise. It will never happen. But the central office staff still put together a "plan" to justify their own positions.

Yes I'm a MCPS teacher and we have already heard about it at my school as a possibility. I have a feeling many of my kids won't show up.

MCEA previously negotiated an advanced notice provision for any new periods of virtual instruction. Unless those have been rescinded or removed from subsequent contracts, it effectively guarantees MCPS will never be able to do this.
