Small dog that’s easy to house break?

We have a larger dog and are big believers in immediate and extended dog training. Maybe for this reason our current dog is super obedient and was easy to potty train. We are thinking of getting a smaller dog but do not want pee pads or a dog that won’t do its business outside.

Any recommendations? Maltese, Havanese, King Charles Cavalier?

What are you looking for aside from easy to housebreak? With just that criteria I'd maybe consider a papillon? A mini schnauzer? A Maltese?

The only small dog I ever owned was our adorable and beloved Jack Russell terrier. She was highly trainable with high agility but had the world's smallest bladder. If you didn't get her outside every 2-3 hours, she would unload on the floor without shame. For that reason, I have always thought all small dogs had tiny bladders and needed to go out frequently. Our current 60-pound dog can go 8+ hours between outings.

Our toy poodle (8lbs) needs to go out every 4 hours or so. I think anything much longer than that is difficult on her little bladder. Our 30-lb mutt can hold it for virtually forever (we don't make her do so -- she just does; she is trained to ring bells when she needs to go out so she's taken out whenever she wants).

My teens want a lazy lap dog they can cuddle. My only requirement is that, with training, it will do its business outside.

Papillons and schnauzers aren't lazy lap dogs at all. Maltese are more of what you want than those other two. Virtually all dogs will, with the appropriate training, potty outside. Also consider a Cavalier King Charles, they are cuddly and relatively easy to train.

My schnauzer is a snuggly lap dog who also likes walks and time outside. No problem with house training.

Have you considered a cat? If the kids want a lazy pet, perhaps look at a cat or dog who is 3+ years old. They are just as loving and easy to train, plus you don't have any of the puppy/kitten shenanigans.

Cavachon---our little guy can hold it up to 8 hrs (although he rarely has to hold it that long).

He was potty trained at 4 months without too much fuss.

What kind of dog is your large dog? Does your dog have to be a purebred?

Also our cavachon loves to snuggle on the couch but he does need a good 15 min session or two each day of exercise.

OP here. Current dog is a standard poodle. Kids have cat allergies. Prefer pure bred.

Cavalier will be a lap dog. Any dog without mental or physical disabilities can be house trained if you are diligent.

It's really dog specific. Our havanese was a nightmare to potty train. She goes constantly (she has a pad inside). Likes to be walked multiple times a day, wants 24/7 attention, hates being alone and likes custom meals.
